SHIP'S BOSUN PHILOSOPHY

Unless the customer desires a complete rebuild I restore wooden museum quality and heirloom ship models to the condition that the original modeler intended. Most restorations require a complete cleaning, some repair and replacement of missing or broken parts. If the model has been uncased and exposed to the elements there is always dust, dirt and grime that has built up over the years. This is especially true when models are exposed to UV light and tobacco smoke. Sails and rigging lines are usually discolored and brittle. I use the original materials on the model as much as possible but when replacement is indicated I match the material and color as close as is possible.

If the model appears to have a historical provenance, I research the project before starting the restoration, as I will not do any work that would devalue the model without owner consent. Some models have only heirloom value because the modeler was a family member or the model has been in the family for a considerable period of time. These projects are treated the same as if they are museum pieces.

I have over 40 years experience in model ship construction and will give you a quality product no matter if the job is a kit construction, scratch build from plans or a restoration of an existing model. As a retired U.S. Navy Boatswain with 25 years of service I will also construct custom Knot Boards, fancy rope work, decorative canvas (‘McNamara Lace’), or any type of rigging that is requested.
